Upgrades

Time has come for some more upgrades to the Lab. I had reached a point where I no longer had enough resources to continue creating VM's and LXC containers for testing and development. So I procured the following:

  • R710 II
  • 48GB DDR3 1333Mhz
  • 4x L5640
  • HD5450

The second R710 will form part of my Proxmox cluster, as much as I would like to upgrade my Homelab to Dell 12G servers they are far too cost prohibitive in the UK for now. Maybe in the future I will build out a R620 Openstack cluster. The 4x L5640 CPU's that I purchased were to upgrade both R710s to six cores while still being relatively power efficient. And finally the Radeon HD5450 was chosen as a cheap low power GPU that I could use to test Proxmox's pass-through features. Any GPU that is intended to the R710 must be under 25W for the server to boot, futhermore I had to cut the back of the PCIE slot to as it was x8 and the card was x16.

Something that I learn is that Dell R710s do NOT run 1333Mhz ram at full speed unless your BIOS is updated and you are running a X56xx series Xeon.

Happy Labbing
